Ogun Speaker Praises Buhari Over June 12

Michael-Azeez Ogunsiji
ABEOKUTA - Speaker of the Ogun State House of Assembly Olakunle Oluomo has commended President Muhammadu Buhari and the eighth National Assembly for redressing the military’s injustice in the annulment of the June 12, 1993 Presidential election which is adjudged as the freest and fairest election in Nigeria’s history.

Oluomo, while fielding questions from journalists in Abeokuta on the commemoration of 20years uninterrupted democracy, noted that President Buhari deserved praises for his assent to the Public Holiday (Amendment) Bill to give legal backing for the commemoration of June 12 as democracy day.

He explained that the new law, which accommodated June 12 as a national public holiday, showed that Buhari remains committed to national integrity, cohesion and democratic principles, aimed at building a country devoid of injustice, tribal and sectional differences.

The speaker assured the people that the ninth Assembly would protect democratic ideals towards engendering good and credible governance.

He noted that “as one of the foot soldiers of the late human rights crusader, Chief Gani Faweinmi”, he acknowledged the supreme sacrifice which Abiola and other martyrs of democracy paid in the struggle for the actualisation of June 12, and the entrenchment of democratic government in the country.

Oluomo promised that the ninth Assembly, under his leadership, would complement the executive in the execution of policies and programmes to improve the people’s socio-economic wellbeing.
