Egba Nation To Celebrate New Yam Festival On Tuesday

ABEOKUTA - The Egba indigenes all over the world would start eating new yam as from tomorrow, Tuesday 20 August, 2019.

The order to commence eating new yam would be formally proclaimed at the this year's Yam Festival, by the Alake and Paramount Monarch of Egbaland, Oba Adedotun Gbadebo at 12 noon of that day at the Ake Palace.

Until the Alake eats the new yam and proclaims it fit and proper for food and economic activities, all indigenes of the Egba Nation may not taste it or engage in buying or selling the revered farmer's pride.

The statement explained that the Alake must first pray and bless all farm products especially yam, which is traditional regarded as a major economic and food product in Yorubaland.

The statement from the Ake Palace, a Festival Night would usher in the  formal Yam Festival on Monday night which would feature homages and other traditional activities.

The Yam Festival would be attended by farmers, yam and other farm produce sellers, Egba Chiefs at home and abroad as well as clubs and societies.
