Football: Agunragbaja's Cup Kicks Off Jan. 3 In Abeokuta

ABEOKUTA - The second of Agunragbaja's Cup will kick off in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital on Friday 3rd, January, 2020.

The competition named after late Chief Imam of Egbaland, Alhaji Alimi Akanbi Lawal was to discover talents and take the youths off the streets from social vices. 

Speaking at the group fixtures ceremony held at the MKO Abiola Stadium, Kuto, Abeokuta on Sunday, the President, All-stars Football Club, Alhaji Lawal Adeoye Waheed enjoined grassroots coaches to expose their players to regular club competitions for more experience. 

The former NEPA FC player said he decided to host the competition in his late father's name as a way of giving back to the society as a former player. 

Lawal however explained that, the final of the competition would be played on February 1, 2020 at the training pitch of the MKO Abiola Stadium, Abeokuta.

"The idea of organizing this competition is to take off the youths off the street and discover talents. I want to urge the coaches to jetisson personal ambition for the growth and development of the game in Egbaland. 

"Last year, the competition was organized for U-13, U-15 and U18, but this year is free age and we are expecting teams from Ibadan and Ijebu to show interest.

"As a former National League player, we decided to host it as a way of giving back to the society and in honour of former chief Imam of Egbaland, Alh. Alimi Akanbi Lawal who is my father."

Meanwhile, the participating eight teams have been grouped into two with Oluwole FC, Great United, FMC United, and United Stars in group A while, Mission Soccer Academy, Egba Anglican Diocese, Allen Taylor Academy and Oloyede FC in group B. 

The opening match between Oluwole FC and Great United will take place on Friday, 3rd January, 2020 at the training pitch of MKO Abiola Stadium, Kuto in Abeokuta.
