ABEOKUTA - The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has carpeted the Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, SAN for declaring the South West regional security network, Amotekun as being illegal.

NANS said the statement credited to the AGF that the set up of the paramilitary organization runs foul of the provisions of the Nigerian law was a tactical move to make the Southwest zone vulnerable to continuous attack on the people, especially students by the North.

Addressing journalists at the NUJ secretariat, Iwe-Irohin House, Oke-Ilewo in Abeokuta, Ogun state on Wednesday, the South-West Zonal Coordinator, NANS, zone D,  Comrade Kowe Odunayo said the security structure is imperative in the face of incessant attack by Fulani herdsmen in the South-West.

The students body claimed that, the refusal of the federal government and some sections in the North was attestation to the fact the Northerners are behind the security threats in the country.

The students therefore, enjoined the South West governors to remain unshaken in the smooth actualization of the security network, pledging their solidarity support to the governors.

The Zone D Coordinator said, "it is no news that insecurity has engulfed the South West among other regions of the country. This prompted our ever thinking South-West leaders most especially our governors to come up with a security architecture specially designed to safeguard the southwest.

"But it became mouth watering surprise for us when we heard that the powers that be outside our zone are not pleased with the move. This became more evident when a Fulani/Hausa youth group spoke though recently condemning our security architecture even when it has nothing to do with them.

"But we became perplexed when the Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami said the security group runs foul of the law, the news we received with great shock.

"As much as we have played apt attention to the wordings of the statement, we have noticed no other thing other than politics and an attempt to block the west from defending itself against attacks by the North.

"We have realized that, the north only want the south west to continue to suffer insecurity because they know that, if security could be achieved in the Southwest, our economy in this region will boost and we would have all that we are supposed to have even for us to attain the status of a sovereign state (country).

"We however use this medium to appeal to our Governors to stand on their feet and ensure that this laudable initiative is not allowed to be killed by some enemies of our peace. "
