SWAN Tasks Ogun Govt To Resuscitate Principal's Cup, Secondary School Games

ABEOKUTA - Ogun State Chapter, Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) has stressed the need for the state government to resuscitate grassroot sports especially in organising a mini festival that would engage youths in sporting activities and assist the state to discover new talents.

The State Chairman of the association, Alhaji Hakeem Akintunde made this call on Wednesday when the executive members of Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) paid the Commissioner for Youth and Sports in the state a courtesy visit.

Akintunde described sports as important sector to reduce youth restiveness saying there was need for the state athletes to commence early preparations for the National Sports Festival to ensure that state return to its leading place in the sector.

He called on the state government to ensure the resuscitation of the Principal's cup and school games among secondary schools in the state. 

The SWAN Chairman noted that, the best way to develop grassroots football in the state was through sustainability of different state competitions.

"We want to urge the ministry to convince the state governor on the need to start early camping for National Sports Festival. I want to assure you of the association's support. 

"Also, we hope and beg to look into the sustainability of the annual Principal's cup in the state. This is the only way to get the genuine grassroots players in the state. 

"We cannot get good athletes if we are not harnessing the potentials we have in the state. Let us find ways of resuscitating secondary school games back to actively engage our youths and build their interest in sports at early stage", the SWAN Chairman said. 

In his remark, the State commissioner for Youth and Sports, Dr. Oluwadare Kehinde solicited the support of stakeholders especially sports Journalists in reviving the sector in the state.

The Youth and Sports Commissioner who noted that the task of developing the sports sector required the contributions of individuals, groups and association promised to run an open-door policy towards ensuring positive turn around in the sector.

He commended the SWAN executives and members for discharging their duties  professionally and promised work with them for the development of the sector.
