Coronavirus Vaccine: Use Your Families First For Trial, Youths Tell Northern Governors

LAGOS – Northern Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) has faulted the reported decision of some governors in the North to carry out a trial test of COVID-19 vaccine on the Northern people, stressing that the governors had the right to indicate interest in the trial, but should first present themselves and their children to be used for such tests.
NYCN maintained that they were not Guinea pigs, pointing out that leadership should be by example, and that the case at hand shouldn’t be an exemption.
It stressed that the rich, through their globe-throating and in search of greener pastures for themselves and children, imported the disease into the country. It said if they had all remained in the country, “the nation wouldn’t have found ourselves in the mess today,” maintaining that they were duty and morally bound to present themselves for the treatment and vaccine trial.
In a press statement made available to newsmen on Tuesday by Comrade Isah Abubakar, national president of NYCN, the group stated that its attention had been drawn to a statement credited to the Honourable Minister of Health wherein he listed the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and five Northern states, whose governors had given foreign collaborators the green light to use their citizens as laboratory rats for the clinical trials of the much touted COVID-19 curative drugs and vaccine.
The northern group condemned the decision of the governors of the states of Kaduna, Kano and Sokoto, as well as the FCT Minister for taking such complex decision on behalf of their people without due consultations with relevant stakeholders.
“We wish to state without any fear of contradiction that our people are not Guinea Pigs for such trials. We are yet to hear of such trial in United State of America where reported cases of infection have exceeded one million with corresponding high fatality rate far above fatalities in all African nations combined.
“The case of such trial conducted by Pfizer in Kano that has disabled so many potential northern Nigeria human capital is still fresh in our memory.
