ABEOKUTA - Former Green Eagles' Captain, Olusegun Odegbami has supported the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) decision to cancel the 2019/2020 Nigeria Professional Football League season.

Odegbami disclosed this recently while featuring in an online hot seat of FCT Football Update, saying the cancellation of the League season was the best that could have happened at this point in time.

"It made absolute sense that in the midst of a pandemic that Nigeria is unprepared for, that we don't know much about, that the whole world is learning about the virus, for us to plunge our young people and those who follow football into that kind of risk, does not make sense."

He insisted that the health and safety of the players, officials and the spectators were non negotiable, thereby approving the cancellation.

THE ENCOUNTER NEWS recall that, the Nigerian football governing body had on Friday, July 10 announced cancellation of NPFL season after an online meeting between its executive committee and the league board.

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) have made the decision to cancel the 2019-20 Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) season due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The top-flight was initially suspended on March 18 after matchday 25, as part of preventive measures to control the spread of Covid-19 in the West African country.

Almost four months after its suspension, the NFF held an online meeting which had in attendance its executive committee, national league chairpersons and the president of the Nigeria Referees Association.

Odegbami who recapitulates his playing career said, the high moments in his playing career, was "winning the 1980 Africa Cup of Nations for the first time".

Odegbami cited the none qualification of the country for the World cup, as the only regret of the period.

He rated improvement in the facilities, equipment and technicalities as the high point of present day football.
