ABEOKUTA - The establishment of Ogun State Sports Commission as proposed by the State Government will grant autonomy of the state sports council to perform efficiently.

The Acting Director, Ogun State Sports Council, Mrs. Oluwakemi Iyabode Rotimi disclosed this last week when executive members of Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Ogun State chapter paid a working visit to the council.

Mrs. Rotimi who lamented the neglect of sports sector in the state in the last eight years commended Prince Dapo Abiodun's administration for initiating the implementation of the sports commission and the Sports Trust Fund Bill.

The Ag. Director however expressed optimism that, the Sports Commission if assented by the State Governor would revive the dwindling fortunes of sports in the state.

She therefore appealed to sports writers in the state to collaborate with the state government on development of the sports sector.

"When we talk about sports, SWAN is always at the forefront. They're technocrats, because they know where it pinches. Anytime, we have opportunity, although, we have a little setback when it comes to taking over sports activities in the state.

"Let's work as partners in progress. Let's deliberate over sports development in Ogun state. Sports commission will guarantee our independence.

"We hope the sports commission Bill will be expressingly signed by Governor Abiodun to make sports forward in Ogun state."

Speaking earlier, the SWAN Chairman, Hakeem Akintunde regretted the global pandemic which has crippled sporting activities across world.

He appealed to the state government through the ministry of youths and sports to lift embargo on non-contact games as other states athletes have began training.
