Limit NYSC Scheme To Zonal Level

OWERRI - The Federal Government of Nigeria has been urged to limit the National Youths Service  Service Scheme to Zonal Level.

According to a Group of parents and Guardians, who stand by the name "worried  parents and Guardians ” ,this will reduce the risk faced by corp members and those yet to be posted  for  the National Service.

The spokesman of the Group, Chief Gabriel Ogujiofor Amara said that the Group decided to take this stand following the rising level of insecurity  currently on in Nigeria.

According to him, the Group has lost confidence on the present security architecture in the country pointing out that ” every day people, innocent people are being kidnapped particularly on the high ways in the North.

The Group he further said believes that corp members are supposed to be posted to the areas they are familia with  recalling that some corp members have lost their lives in the past due to insurgency, banditry and even kidnapping during general elections.

It however noted the usefulness of the scheme in the country as it affects the unity and ones of the ethnic groups in the country, pointing out that such usefulness has been overtaken by the present style of governance and the current security situation in the country.

Chief Amara who spoke to journalists in Owerri Imo State, on behalf of his membership which cut across the South East geo political zone said that the management of the scheme should resort to posting prospective corp members to serve  in the political zones of their zone of their origin.

He observed that the corp members deployed to Northern states particularly states in the North East and middle belt region in the country stands the risk of falling victims to insurgent attacks, banditry and other forms of criminality.

The group further suggested that the corp members should be insured by the Federal Government before they commence their service year.

It used the opportunity to call on the Federal Government to take urgent steps to address the security challenges facing the country now saying, ” it has never been like this before in this country
